Other Weird Facts

  • There is no such thing as free refills in Spain. You buy one soda and then another :(
  • The only kind of jeans the women wear are skinny jeans. How ironic because everyone here is so skinny! You can only find size 0-8 in the stores.
  • The climate in the northern part of Spain is completely different than the rest of the country. The temperature here is moderate year around, and it doesn't get much hotter than 80 degrees in the summer. It also rains quite frequently. The whole rest of the state is very dry and very hot! It can get to over 100 degrees in the summer daily.
  • Don't expect to find ketchup, peanut butter or butter anywhere!!
  • Keys are used for everything, and they are gigantic!!
  • Their economy is suffering more than the US. The current unemployment rate in Spain is 25%!!! And if you're 25 or under, the unemployment rates is 50%!!!
  • Rarely do people jaywalk. That happens all day long at UNL.
  • It can be 60 degrees out and the water temperature freezing, but people will still swim in the ocean!
  • Children stay up late. I'll be riding on the metro at 10:30pm and there will be a ton of kids!
  • It's socially acceptable to party with your teachers.
P.S. classes are going great. I don't really like getting up at 6:30am though! There is also a lot of construction going on at the university which sucks. Last night our whole group celebrated the 4th of July at a English bar. Some of the teachers from our school went with too. There was a band playing, an American flag on the wall, and free shots for everyone for an hour!! Wow, some students definitely took full advantage of that hour. They are nuts!
